The Light of Faith Shines in Darkness: Early Rain Covenant Church Endures
Amidst escalating pressure on Christian faith in China, the courageous congregation of Early Rain Covenant Church (ERCC) in Jiangyo has once again demonstrated the unwavering strength that only faith in Christ can bestow. What may appear to the world as a story of repression is, for believers, a powerful testament to the perseverance of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of those who choose to follow Jesus, no matter the cost.
Last Sunday, a sacred day for worship and communion, the peace of ERCC's worship service was abruptly shattered by a significant presence of police and government personnel. An estimated 50 to 60 officers stormed the premises around 11 a.m. local time, transforming a moment of praise into a scene of detention. Yet, what unfolded next echoed the early Christians in the catacombs: instead of succumbing to fear, the believers clung to their God.
A Song of Hope in Captivity
Among those detained and taken for questioning to the local police station were revered leaders such as Elder Yan Hong and Elder Wu Wuqing, along with dozens of congregants, including young children. This act of repression, reported by ChinaAid, a Texas-based Christian persecution watchdog group, underscores the authorities' determination to silence the voice of faith.
But the voice of faith could not be silenced. The church shared a moving account of what transpired: more than 30 members and leaders were “forcibly taken away in several police vehicles.” Far from being intimidated, these brothers and sisters in Christ “fellowshipped, sang hymns, and prayed until most of them were released.” Imagine the power of that scene: in cells or interrogation rooms, the Spirit of God moved, transforming a place of oppression into an impromptu sanctuary of worship and hope. Those who remained, including the elderly and children, were confined to the meeting hall, subjected to identity checks while authorities screamed for them to stop singing. But how do you silence a heart full of praise?
A Legacy of Faithfulness and Spiritual Resistance
Early Rain Covenant Church is no stranger to adversity. Founded in 2008, it has been a beacon of reformed faith in China, and as such, a constant target of authorities. Its founding pastor, Wang Yi, is a living example of this commitment. Sentenced to nine years in prison in 2019 on charges of “subversion of state power” and “illegal business operations,” his incarceration is a somber reminder of the price some pay for their faith. Nevertheless, his ministry and courage continue to inspire the congregation and the global church.
The first major raid against ERCC occurred in December 2018, when Pastor Wang Yi, his wife Jiang Rong, and over a hundred members of his congregation were detained. The accusation: violating religious regulations by not registering with the government. However, for ERCC, registration with the government cannot supersede their ultimate allegiance to Christ as the head of the Church.
A Call for Prayer and Global Solidarity
Bob Fu, founder of ChinaAid, who himself escaped China in 1996 after being repeatedly arrested in Beijing for leading house churches, has vehemently denounced these actions. “It is another stark reminder that the Chinese Communist Party continues to treat peaceful Christian worship as a threat to state control,” Fu stated. He called on the international community, democratic governments, and all people of conscience to speak out and demand the immediate release of those detained.
The detention of church leaders, ordinary believers, and even children for participating in a Sunday worship service is a grave violation of religious freedom and fundamental human rights. The Chinese Communist Party's strategy of tightening its grip on churches and other Christian institutions is evident, seeking to align faith with communist ideology. They have placed a particular emphasis on capturing the minds of the youth, banning minors under 18 from entering churches or participating in religious activities since 2018. This makes ministry leaders focused on the next generation of Christians special targets of state hostility.
But, as the history of the Church has shown time and again, faith cannot be imprisoned, nor can hope be silenced. The spiritual resilience of Early Rain Covenant Church is a beacon for all of us, reminding us that true strength does not lie in earthly power, but in faithfulness to a God who is sovereign over all nations and governments. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in China, for their protection, their release, and for the continued advancement of the Gospel despite adversity. May their testimony inspire us to live our own faith with greater boldness and devotion.
