Spielberg y la Fe: ¿Puede el Cosmos Desafiar Nuestra Creencia en Dios?

Steven Spielberg's new film, 'Disclosure Day,' explores extraterrestrial life and its theological implications. A call to reflect on God's sovereignty in a vast universe.

In a world rapidly advancing in the exploration of the unknown, acclaimed director Steven Spielberg invites us to a profound spiritual reflection with his upcoming film, “Disclosure Day.” During an interview with Ben Mankiewicz on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Spielberg suggested that his work, centered on the discovery of extraterrestrial life, might raise crucial theological questions for many believers. Far from being a threat, this conversation represents a golden opportunity for the Church to reaffirm the immensity and sovereignty of our Creator.

The director articulated a central question: “Is God, our God, only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there’s civilization, intelligent life, and even developing life?” This question, explored through a key character in the film, a former Roman Catholic nun, is not new to Christian theology. Since time immemorial, faith has contemplated the vastness of the universe and the glory of a God who transcends all human understanding. Psalm 19 reminds us that “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands,” a truth not limited to a single planet but extending throughout all creation.

Unshakeable Faith in the Face of the Unknown

The idea of “ontological shock” or “social dislocation” that could arise from a government revelation about extraterrestrial beings is the narrative core of Spielberg's film. However, for those whose faith is founded on the Rock that is Christ, the existence of other intelligent life forms should not be a cause for faltering. As Christian voices like podcaster Josh Daws and Eric Sammons of Crisis Magazine rightly pointed out, Christian faith is robust enough to integrate any cosmic discovery within a biblical worldview. Our God is the Creator of all things visible and invisible, known and yet to be known (Colossians 1:16-17). His power and majesty are not confined to Earth but encompass galaxies and dimensions we can barely imagine.

Spielberg’s film, by touching on the position of the Catholic Church and its implications for fundamental beliefs, encourages us to examine how our faith relates to scientific understanding and the possibilities of the cosmos. Far from being a weakness, this capacity for theological reflection and adaptation is a strength of Christianity, which always seeks God’s truth and glory in all facets of existence.

Spiritual Discernment: Beyond the Stars

Interestingly, the discussion surrounding unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) and extraterrestrial life has taken on a significant spiritual dimension within the Christian community. In recent months, we have seen a growing debate over whether these phenomena might be inextricably linked to the occult and the demonic. The recent removal of Monsignor Stephen J. Rossetti as an exorcist, after expressing his opinion that “probably many, if not most, of these UFO sightings are, in fact, demons,” underscores the seriousness with which some spiritual leaders approach this topic.

This perspective, shared by other clergy such as Father Chad Ripperger, highlights the importance of spiritual discernment in a time when the inexplicable is often attributed to the extraterrestrial. The Bible warns us about battles not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). For a Christian mind, any unusual manifestation in the sky or on Earth must be examined not only from a scientific perspective but also from a spiritual one, seeking truth in God’s Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

A Call to Church Preparedness

Conversations about UAPs and their theological implications are not just for the big screen. Recently, a group of Charismatic pastors claimed to have met with U.S. officials to discuss preparing the Church for potential disclosure. While the details of such meetings are subject to debate, the mere existence of these conversations serves as a strong reminder to the Church that we must always be prepared, not only for what might come from the stars but for any challenge to our faith and understanding of the world.

The Pentagon's release of UAP files, urging the public to draw their own conclusions, reminds us that the pursuit of truth is a continuous journey. For the believer, this journey must be anchored in the immutable truth of God. Our hope and security do not reside in what governments reveal or what movies speculate, but in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Ultimately, Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” can serve as a catalyst for the Church to deepen its understanding of divine creation, reaffirm God’s sovereignty over the entire cosmos, and strengthen its capacity for spiritual discernment. May every new revelation, whether scientific or cinematic, compel us to worship with greater fervor Him who created the heavens and the earth, and whose glory is manifested in every corner of His vast and awe-inspiring universe.
